A beginning that lasts a lifetime.
We're a small UK charity supporting Rukungiri Modern Primary School in southern Uganda — where over 700 children come every day to learn, eat, grow, and belong. You can be part of that through child sponorship or donating towards projects.

What we do
A school that started with a vision.
Rukungiri Modern Primary School began with one couple's vision and a group of friends in the UK who believed in it. Everything since — every classroom, every meal, every child who has learned to read — has grown from that original, simple partnership.
Children here want to be in school.
Rukungiri Modern Primary School opened in 1997. Within a decade it had achieved the third highest P7 exam results in all of Uganda. The school teaches in English from Primary 1 upwards, with a curriculum covering mathematics, science, English, and religious education — a rigorous education by any standard, not just by regional ones.
African children, as one long-term visitor put it, understand the importance of education and what it means for their future. They show up. Every day. Even when the walk is long and the day stretches from early morning to evening.

Imagine what it must take to get to Rukungiri.
South-western Uganda, high in the hills.
Rukungiri sits in the Kigezi sub-region of south-western Uganda, about 380 kilometres by road from Kampala — a journey that can take five to six hours depending on the route and the season. The town itself is perched on a hilltop, surrounded by a landscape of interlocking ridges and valleys.
Close to the equator, but not what you'd expect.
Rukungiri District is predominantly agricultural: subsistence farming is the economic backbone for most families. Two rainy seasons shape the agricultural year. The landscape — lush valleys, red-earthed roads, tea plants catching the mist — is extraordinary. It is remote in the practical sense: far from Kampala, far from international infrastructure. But it is very much alive.
Why distance matters for education.
For many children in and around Rukungiri, the barriers to education are practical before they are financial. Distance, terrain, the cost of uniforms and supplies — any one of these can be enough to keep a child at home. Rukungiri Modern Primary School sits in the community it serves, which is precisely why sponsorship here is so direct. Your support doesn't travel through layers of administration. It arrives.

Impact That Lasts

A word from the ground
Don't take our word for it. Hear from people at the school.
This is Eric's story of transformation. Discover how the Rukungiri Modern Primary School and the donor relationship helped to shape a future he dreamed of.

Every pound goes to the school
What does a donation do?
Gifts to ROP pay for the things that keep 700 children in school and learning: meals, uniforms, books, soap, clean water, and the facilities that make it all possible. Our trustees are all volunteers. No one in the UK takes a salary.
Donate today.
You can send a donation or set up sponsorship in a few minutes. The child you help will write to you. That relationship — small, personal, across a great distance — the children knowing someone believes in them.
Did you know about partnerships
Our Partners make it possible.
ROP works because people and organisations choose to stand behind it. Over the years, churches, community groups, and supporters across the UK have given time, money, and energy to keep this school going. These are some of the partners who make that possible.
